ABSTRACT

Six generations removed from that fratricidal conflict, it sometimes seems that we are still fighting the Civil War and living in its long shadow. The authors can learn a great deal about our national character by studying the American Civil War, the people who emerged at the forefront of its history, and its difficult legacy. The Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Heritage Area is home to the most concentrated swath of soil touched by those who wore the blue and gray. The staff of the education program of the Civil War Trust works hard to develop teacher-friendly materials to assist them in teaching about the Civil War. Each student at the beginning of the year purchased a marble composition book in which to record his or her responses to class field trips.
