ABSTRACT

True to form, Jim Percoco has written another useful teacher resource book, this one designed to bring historic sites into the classroom. In the process, he convincingly builds a case for the importance of location, in addition to time, as a crucial element in teaching and learning history. The lessons in Take the Journey are focused on the Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Heritage Area, an area along the East Coast. Teachers within the boundaries of the area or in surrounding environs can employ the lessons and take their students on field trips to various sites. Jim also makes the case for teaching difficult topics and how to approach them with students. Jim has never been one to shy away from controversial topics. Teachers who are interested in encouraging their students to go further with their projects can involve the students in the National History Day program.
