ABSTRACT

As children come to expect a time each day for sharing oral stories and see that they have stories to tell, we want them to know there is another way to tell their stories: on paper. We have prepared and made ready spiral-bound books with blank pages on which children will “write” their stories and a larger version for the teacher. We call it the Drawing & Writing Book. Sometimes children grab on to an idea because they hear those around them coming up with ideas and they think they are supposed to have one. Children's literature is one resource that we draw on for many of the lessons because we know that showing the students the work of professional writers and illustrators and talking about how they practice their craft will help them envision their own stories. This chapter focuses on a lesson where children learn about drawing from one of their classmates.
