ABSTRACT

Once children began paying attention to shape and we noticed them looking closely and observing as they sketched, we hoped we would see some carryover between the sketching lessons and their illustrations in their Drawing & Writing Books. For the most part, however, there was not any. They sketched exquisite, real-looking people in their sketchbooks—and seemed to enjoy doing it—but in their Drawing & Writing Books we saw the same stick people. It did not take long for us to figure out that the expectations were not realistic. Those few sketching lessons couldn't possibly be internalized so quickly. They would need many more opportunities for practice, and we could not expect them to make those connections on their own; we would need to do that for them. This chapter addresses in more detail some elements of the craft of drawing.
