ABSTRACT

Once children have begun working in booklets, they need information that will push them forward as writers: they need to know more about craft, and they need more information about the mechanical aspects of writing. As children write books and tell stories that continue from page to page, they need information about how to ensure that their multipage stories make sense. This chapter illustrates how writers and drawers keep certain things consistent and make decisions about what to include and what to leave out because they want their stories to make sense so readers will understand. Revision is a natural part of writing, and we want the students to view it that way, but it will be natural to them only if it is natural to us. Beginnings, endings, and titles are elements of craft that, for the most part, children know something about and include in their writing on their own.
