ABSTRACT

The Olympics are a peaceful celebration of our warlike nature. The opening ceremony represents one side of the Olympic movement. Dancers, especially at the opening ceremony, smile in warmth and friendship. The Olympic Games appeal both to our desire for fellowship and our desire for status, to the dreams of community and also supremacy. Students need to be able to move beyond believing and doubting to discovering their own stance on an issue. Students have to find some answers they can turn into defensible assertions in their own writing. Students quickly find that——unlike the five-paragraph essay——individual “chunks” rarely are contained within single paragraphs in published writing. The search for knowledge leads to the production of knowledge; it’s a generative, constructive process of knowledge making as much as it’s a process of knowledge finding.
