ABSTRACT

Mermaids and rainbow fish live here, and if the people look close enough, they will see a golden palace. Brian, who helped construct the palace with cereal boxes and toilet-paper rolls and painted it a glittery gold, writes four pages describing its wonders. There are, however, some indications of a not-so-typical kindergarten classroom. The vibrant construction-paper scenes hanging from the ceiling turn the meeting area into a theatrical extravaganza. In the library corner, children sprawl individually and in small groups, looking at favorite books. The children sign up and rotate through different areas, needing minimal teacher intervention. Starting a story midway through the action, however, is a guaranteed spoiler, so let’s go back in time and start a story from the first day of school year, when things were very, very different.
