Kids stream in with parents and caregivers in an ever-increasing swell. Classrooms are identified, coat hooks zeroed in on, backpacks shrugged off, and extra clothes stowed away. Cunningham and Shagoury use the metaphor of tide pools to describe kindergartens. Brian was the quieter twin, intensely focused, deeply motivated. There are some little girls who are born to be princesses, adoring and ready to be adored, and Jasmine was one such little girl. In the short span of their years, many of the children had traveled across continents and cultures. The children’s perception of what constituted a reader or a writer differed widely. Kindergarten literacy has been too often treated as primary school literacy. It needs to be treated separately as both play and purpose. A focus on storytelling and story writing attends to current educational demands without ignoring the developmental needs of young children.
