ABSTRACT

Writers share their stories with a larger community through publishing; readers share their ideas about books through summarizing and synthesizing. The primary goal of a writer is to communicate a message. Besides the prestapled booklets, the materials at the writing center include blank sheets that the children can staple together to form their own booklets according to the number of pages they need. More children add their cards to the line over the course of the week. There is usually no dearth of authors willing to share. The children wanted to illustrate their own covers once the people had built shared understanding of what constitutes a book cover. The children are used to commenting, questioning, and suggesting changes to stories by their peers during daily Author’s Chair. The comments are unstintingly joyous.
