ABSTRACT

Fairy tales tend to have strong, predictable structures and lend themselves to repeated opportunities for students to interact with the texts and apply retelling and comprehension strategies, enabling them to transfer these strategies to other text structures. Fairy tales also lend themselves to performance that can be incorporated within the learning community throughout the year. The focus lessons that follow guide the reader through the different stages for expanding the reading workshop. The children explore the genre of fairy tales in depth and learn to identify its characteristics. The rest of the children could choose different roles and costume themselves appropriately. Several more ideas are suggested, all clearly demonstrating that the children have caught on to the idea that random ideas will not find favor with their peers as much as well-considered ones that follow leads offered by the author.
