ABSTRACT

The following lessons expand the writing workshop through a series of focus lessons that once again deliberately mirror the lessons for expanding the reading workshop. The excitement of the children is so contagious that paint-spilled classrooms and clothes are forgiven by custodians and parents alike. Some other children are working at refining their storytelling skills. While they demonstrate their engagement with the lessons taught, they are in the process of further developing their expertise through teacher intervention. A few children have marvelous story ideas but need significant help in executing them. The idea is that the audience will come to the author, who will remain seated in his or her chosen spot. People are arranged in groups around tables, on the rugs, in and around play sets—in the castle, behind the forest, perched on the mountain, or wading in the ocean.
