ABSTRACT

Assessment therefore needs to be embedded in instruction as a continuous and ongoing process. It has to be conceived and executed within the context of daily instruction. The yearlong literacy overview is the starting point for planning instruction every year. The word-study lessons are an opportunity to use, practice, and refine many of the skills used in reading and writing. The reading conference folder is again a two-pocket folder and includes a conference record for each student and a bunch of easy readers at a range of reading levels. The writing conference folder is also a two-pocket folder; inside, there are conference records for each student. The overarching essential questions ingrained in the literacy overview are broken up into specific learning targets, and it is these that guide conference questions. Jasmine continued writing with engagement and enthusiasm and made conscious decisions about her writing every day.
