ABSTRACT

Nature study in the springtime is enticing for a variety of reasons. The warmer temperatures also bring back the wild plants and animals—insects in various stages of their life cycles, salamanders, and the green sprouts of perennial plants poking through dried leaves on the forest floor. Students spread throughout the park under the watchful eye of teachers and parents. Soccer matches, playground equipment, feeding the ducks, and fishing, as well as indoor crafts and games, offer enough choices for everyone. After several visits to the stream, even the most tentative students, those who were fearful of open space and yucky worms, begin the daily mantra.
