ABSTRACT

Reading workshop is a beautiful structure for kids to “come of age” as readers and develop a lifelong love of reading. In its most basic format, reading workshop is an instructional practice that allows all students to access texts and receive instruction that will enable them to learn strategies to become more proficient readers. The workshop model makes time for students to read independently, time for the teacher and students to meet together, and time for reflection and goal setting on a daily basis. In reading workshop children have access to high-quality, high-interest books that will comfort them, challenge them, entertain them, and help them learn about the world in which they live. Reading involves an interactive, problem-solving collaboration between the reader, the text, and the reader's purpose for reading. The familiar structure and key components of reading workshop fit seamlessly into any language arts block.
