ABSTRACT

Assessment isn't formative if it doesn't influence learning in a positive way. In most school systems, a good part of the school year has focused on student assessment. In most school systems, a good part of the school year has focused on student assessment. Administering a running record helps a teacher determine readers' strengths and needs. Admit and exit slips are two quick ways to survey the class and gain insight into the understanding of a strategy taught, thinking around a concept that has been introduced or will be introduced, or any work the class is engaged in. Practical assessments give teachers the knowledge they need to help students grow and evolve into mature, confident readers. Assessment practices that include opportunities for the reader to reflect on teaching and give students opportunities to reflect on their learning will provide rewarding outcomes.
