ABSTRACT

Reading workshop helps teachers foster a spirit of curiosity and appreciation of literature. Text-to-world connections are the bigger connections that a reader brings from background knowledge or schema. Lively conversations around a book can be planned (e.g., stopping at a specific spot in a read-aloud) or spontaneous. During reading, students continue to engage in personal meaning-making strategies. These strategies include monitoring for understanding. Making predictions during reading is an attempt to speculate about what is going to happen as the plot develops and synthesize clues to validate or invalidate those predictions. Giving children full attention as they respond is all they need to feel affirmed and motivated to read. It is important that students believe they have the freedom to respond to texts that reflect their individuality and their reading tastes.
