ABSTRACT

Ideas related to patterns, graphs, and equations permeate the middle school curriculum. Students in grades six and seven continue to develop their conceptual understanding of patterns, graphs, and algebraic thinking as they build a foundation for the study of functions. The open nature of this game gives students the opportunity to expand their sense of structural algebra. In this game, the drawing team is given a Patternary card of a growing pattern. The card shows the first two images, without independent and dependent variables identified. In this puzzle, students are provided with a graph and a story, which represent the time-distance scenarios of three or four campers. Puzzlers use the given information to identify the part of the graph that represents each camper and then answer a question about the speed of one of the campers. Invite partners to create a dramatization of a twenty-second event involving time and distance.
