ABSTRACT

The development of an internal linear representation of numbers is essential to success in mathematics, and playing games with numbered game boards can help develop such a model. Young children need many opportunities to develop and internalize multiple representations of numbers. Different representations of the same number make a match. The teacher points to the first card and asks Krista to choose and point to one of the numbers shown. The counting aspect of the game is aimed at kindergartners, while the qualitative reasoning can provide a challenge for learners of any age. There are several variations to the game, allowing interest to be maintained. Students’ ability to make predictions is likely to improve if they complete the Nim Recording Sheet. Demonstrate the game to the whole class by projecting fifteen counters in a row and asking a student to play the game with you.
