ABSTRACT

Moving from a view of numbers as ones to understanding our base ten representation of numbers is a key goal of the primary grades, one that underpins students’ number sense and many computation strategies. Understanding place value includes the ability to understand regrouping and to make connections among different representations of numbers. Some of the games and puzzles connect to addition and subtraction, though conceptual understanding of our base ten number system is always the main focus. The students have built a tens piece from ones pieces placed end-to-end and a hundreds piece from the tens pieces placed side by side. The teacher begins this math lesson by reviewing the renaming process. Classification involves grouping things based on their attributes. The students on the other team, the guessers, choose numbers for the team that knows the labels to place correctly in the diagram.
