ABSTRACT

Initially students model addition by counting each set, combining the sets, and counting all to determine the total. Counting on is an important developmental milestone. The numbers are represented on five-frames, the top row of a ten-frame. A kindergarten teacher gives each student a set of five-frames that represent the numbers zero through five. Players might do so by modeling or counting to find sums or by applying fact knowledge. Students might also realize, or discover through playing the game, that addends written in a different order have the same sum. A first-grade teacher uses a number scale to motivate a conversation about equality. Triangle Totals puzzles are a classic activity that requires puzzlers to arrange a given set of numbers in a triangle so that the sum of the numbers on each side of the triangle is the same.
