ABSTRACT

Author clubs look to capture that love—that ability to sit curled with a book or in rapt attention to the words—and use this power to learn from favorites. Create collaborative opportunities for learning around discipline connections, authentic contexts, problem-solving opportunities, and use of mentors, choice, voice, and agency—these are why author clubs are critical to the development of students as writers and people. Just as in genre clubs, students can and should be invited into this inquiry, gathering books and information about the chosen author. The author Clubs are opportunities to study both the craft and life of authors the students choose themselves. Students love the idea of having a favorite author by their side during writing. One of the primary goals of the reveal is to get students excited about their upcoming club work. The author clubs are the perfect place to reflect on reading-writing connections. Students are empowered by their mentorship and by the autonomy and decision-making they engage in.
