ABSTRACT

Writing clubs have become a powerful and effective way to continue student collaborations in the age of hybrid and remote teaching. In complement craft clubs students read the same text many times. We implement craft clubs when students are focusing more on crafting their writing. This shift in focus generally happens when students are drafting and revising. Choosing mentor texts for craft clubs can seem daunting. In informational writing, word choice is important. Students must define vocabulary words in various ways throughout a text to support the reader. Based on students’ feedback and our whole-group assessment, we made some decisions regarding how the unit would unfold. Because many students stated in their self-assessments that they wanted assistance with leads and endings, we decided to provide lessons and club time for the study of each concept.
