ABSTRACT
The previous chapter outlines the ways in which the dominant Australian culture sees old age as a social problem. In line with this view, Australian gerontological surveys have focused on a predictable inventory of old age problems: health, income, employment, housing and other measures of standard of living, and social contact, particularly with family members.
