ABSTRACT
Policies for the aged in Australia reflect the prevailing socially constructed ‘reality’ that aging is a period of decline, poverty and dependence. Thus, they fall easily within the scope of a broader welfare ideology that locates the aetiology of, and solutions to, social problems within the sphere of individual action.
