ABSTRACT
Social gerontology is not a unitary formal domain of scientific enquiry. Its substantive focus — the category of old people — can be analysed from a variety of biological, medical, sociological and psychological perspectives. The raison d’etre of social gerontology as a separate field of enquiry rests ultimately on the application of research to the social problems of old age.
