ABSTRACT

All the women in our sample had responded to the injunction to care. One described the way that she, together with a group of ex-carers, had decided that they were ‘the type of person’ that cared:

You’re either the sort that can turn your back on it and say well, I’m going off to lead my life, or the type that gets caught up in it and however much you protest, and it really does take more out of you than you want to give, if you’re that type of person you go on doing it . . . you find it quite impossible to walk away from doing it.
