ABSTRACT

Voluntary organizations have been making a small, but increasing, contribution to the housing of the elderly in recent years, and they also provide old people’s homes, especially in Scotland. Moreover, the development of certain domiciliary services for old people has been mainly due to voluntary action, since local authorities did not have the necessary powers. The existence of voluntary bodies as alternative suppliers added another dimension to the planning process, and in this chapter the ways in which local authorities took account of the voluntary contribution are considered.
