ABSTRACT

The remaining chapters of Part I are intended to give the reader an overall picture of services for the elderly in Britain. A considerable amount of information is supplied annually by local authorities to central departments and professional associations. The quality of this data is not uniform, which makes for difficulties in interpretation. In this and the following two chapters, an attempt has been made to present the data for 1965. When information for all local authorities was not readily available, figures from case study authorities only have been used. Readers who are already familiar with the services may wish to go straight to the body of the report beginning in Part II.
