ABSTRACT

A great deal of statistical information is available about the basic domiciliary services which contribute to the care of the elderly in their own homes, but much less is known about newer or less well developed services. In this chapter national staffing levels in 1965 for health visiting, home nursing, home help and social workers in England and Wales are compared, where possible, with those in Scotland. The range of variation in staff ratios for these services in individual local authorities is shown, and the ratios compared with the tentative standards for staff ratios suggested by the Ministry of Health. Other aspects of variation between local authorities for which figures are summarized are in the proportion of cases receiving the services who are elderly, and in net expenditure per thousand total population on the services. Finally, the available information on a number of newer or less well developed services is presented.
