ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the rise and emergence of the global environmental justice movement and its relationship with infrastructure systems and megaprojects. First, a brief introduction to the main topics and definitions related to environmental justice, with a historical overview, is provided, and, second, several case studies reported by the Environmental Justice Atlas (EJAtlas) and by scientific and gray literature are reported and discussed. Finally, the impact of social and environmental conflicts on megaprojects and infrastructure performance is discussed by giving some insights for a more holistic and systemic vision for megaprojects’ management in order to consider causalities among the three pillars of sustainability.
