ABSTRACT

In Chapter 2 a distinction was made between direct therapy techniques and ‘indirect therapy*. Counselling skills are important both in the one to one clinical setting and in less formal work, and speech therapists, like other health and social service workers, have often found themselves in situations where the role of counsellor is forced upon them. Often they do not have the necessary training or support to function effectively as a counsellor. While there are numerous general texts and courses on this subject, it is relevant to consider some of the common problems that can arise within the therapeutic situation.
