In 1975 Leutenegger wrote ‘none of us, as rehabilitation specialists, can function autonomously . . . not only must the staff discuss the patients’ needs and attitudes, but they need also to talk with the patient about what and how he is doing . . . Other members of the staff, as well as family members, need to see the full array of the patients’ problems.’
