ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces the historical and theoretical background of the book. It lays out the overarching themes of the book as an articulation of various symbolic systems and material realities by the cosmopolitan actors in large-scale political processes. It further defines the key concepts that anchor the discussion and structure the book: translation and cosmopolitanism.
