ABSTRACT

Members of a family see one another at very close range and often this prevents them from really understanding or evaluating what sort of people their relatives are. In speaking of a member of the family, especially of grown-up children, we usually say ‘My daughter is very capable’ or ‘My son is reliable’ and not ‘My daughter is a very capable woman’ or ‘My son is a reliable man’. We do not really acknowledge that our daughter or our son is a mature person in their own right, acting in an independent capacity.
