ABSTRACT

Frank Rutter (1876-1937) became a professional art critic in 1901. He was Curator of Leeds Art Gallery (1912-17). As the art critic for the Sunday Times (from 1903) and Financial Times and the editor of Art News he was one of the most eloquent champions of modernism. For some years the Allied Artists’ Association, which he set up in 1908, provided exhibition space for modern British and Continental artists.
