ABSTRACT

Holmes (1868–1936) was the editor of the Burlington Magazine between 1903 and 1909 (when Fry took over); he was Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford (1904–10) and Director of the National Portrait Gallery (1909–16). At Fry’s request he lent the weight of his name to the first Post-Impressionist exhibition by allowing it to be added to the list which made up the organising committee. His Notes were published late in 1910 and express a bemused tolerance of Post-Impressionist painting.
