ABSTRACT

The Covid pandemic of 2020 exposed many global trading and production vulnerabilities. One of these was the research into, and production of computer chips. To remedy these vulnerabilities, the EC set up the European Initiative on processors and semiconductor technologies, providing 145 billion euros to further the research, design and production capability of microprocessors in Europe. A little over a year later, the European Chips Act proposed a further 43 billion euros investment ‘to prevent, prepare, anticipate and swiftly respond to any future supply chains disruption.’
