ABSTRACT
Applied science institutes are a typical European phenomenon; they form the bridge between universities and industrial companies. Their formation history and ways of working are unique in each country, so in this chapter I briefly review the most characteristic, viz CEA (France), TNO (Fieldlabs, the Netherlands), Fraunhofer (Germany) and a few Scandinavian knowledge centres.
