Introduction

The Introduction develops the idea that sailing is an upper-middle class sport using the ideas of Michel Foucault and Pierre Bourdieu. There is a tension between the idea of sailing as an escape and sailing as a socially organized activity. Foucault works with archives, whereas Bourdieu is a sociologist who studies social class and the uses of culture, including sports.
