ABSTRACT

This chapter develops the discussion of social class, taking into account some of the complexities identified by Pierre Bourdieu. It does this using a new data set based on a yachting reference book. Bourdieu also discusses issues of naming and classification. What happens to a yacht club when it receives a royal warrant? Yacht clubs have a relation to the state and their members are sometimes considered to be a naval reserve. What does this mean for the sport of sailing?
