ABSTRACT
This chapter is based on participant observation in a middle-class yacht club. It explores issues such as why so many boats stay at dock and do not go out on the water. Although it seems to promote sailing, the club caters mainly to the needs of long-standing members. New sailors get little help with skills development and with their boats. The club has little diversity and its values seem conservative. There is little interest at this yacht club in social change.
