ABSTRACT
This chapter explores where the dream of sailing comes from. It does this through a discussion of Arthur Ransome’s children’s book. The Swallows and Amazons books are widely admired but seem to participate in a colonial imagination. This suggests that the personal investment in sailing, especially long-distance cruising, has a foundation in ideas of exploration and empire.
