ABSTRACT

The Conclusion pulls together arguments about social class and colonialism. It asks why Tahiti is a popular destination for long-distance sailors. The record shows that the port of Papeete is a place to get supplies and do boat repairs. Many sailors record mixed feelings about the busy harbour but say it is a good place to meet other long-distance sailors. The attraction of Tahiti is a kind of illusion based on stereotypes and cultural misunderstandings. These illusions have been elaborated by artists such as Gauguin and writers including Herman Melville.
