ABSTRACT
MISSIONS. St. Augustine landed in Kent in 598 and brought with him Rome’s ideas of what a church should be. These underwent some modification and the buildings of his immediate successors were influenced by the architecture of Charlemagne’s empire. The types of building which these missionaries brought spread up the eastern half of England far northwards from Canterbury, indeed almost to the Cheviots.
