ABSTRACT

THIS title may seem somewhat to beg the question. But the foregoing pages have dealt with fashion as an effect or result which we call style, and we have attempted to discover its origin, while in this section the word is used in a different sense, namely that most common human tendency to copy our neighbours; we are now to consider it as a cause. One practical difference between the two meanings as used here is that one indicates the influence on the designer and the other on the employer.
