ABSTRACT

The conclusion addresses two questions: is Bangladesh's autocratization unique? And, what does the country's future trajectory look like? The chapter draws on the experiences of several other countries (Belarus, Cambodia, Hungary, India, Poland, Turkey, and Venezuela) and demonstrates that three elements are similar. These similar elements are the institutional, media, and ideological factors in autocratization. However, the chapter argues that the external role (particularly the role of neighboring India in providing unqualified support to the incumbent and interjections in domestic politics) is quite unique. It also offers criticism of the Western countries and the United Nations for their negligence.
