ABSTRACT

Because antifeminism is a reaction to the women’s movement, its initial major energies have revolved around discrediting the movement’s leaders and ideology. The women’s movement is simplistically reduced, its major issues are presented as hard and fast and then attacked. The first mode of attack involves undermining the self-identity of women in the movement by personal derision. Snyder comments that ‘such tactics as depicting movement activists as being ugly, man-hating, castrating bitches who were passed over in marriage, and should be at home performing household tasks’ (p. 21) have been used against both the current and past women’s movements.
