ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the texts of a set of ten letters exchanged between two biochemists during the period September 1975 to June 1976. The letters were concerned with resolving what was described as a ‘difference of opinion’ about the technical issue of the stoichiometry of respiratory chain systems in mitochondria. For the purposes of this exercise in discourse analysis, it will not be necessary to understand all the technical details or theoretical ramifications of the debate contained in these letters. Whatever scientific commentary is required will be provided as the analysis unfolds. 1
