ABSTRACT
Surveying the existing literature, this chapter provides a condensed summary of all the key historical developments necessary to understanding the following source-based chapters. This includes an introduction to the different types of clinics and asylums, a sketch of the importance of psychiatric knowledge to state and outline society up to 1941, and an of changes in the psychiatric landscape during the Nazi era.
