ABSTRACT
Most people take some medicines. Some adults rely mainly on prescribed medicines, others are more likely to use self-prescribed ones. Which they do depends partly on their symptoms. This chapter looks at some other variables which may help to explain their behaviour: social class, knowledge, their attitudes to the doctor, some aspects of their personality and, for children, their position in the family.
